This page explains what data is processed when you visit smartmeteo.org and when a Smart Meteo device uses our server.

Who is responsible

Visiting this website

The site is plain static pages. It sets no cookies, uses no analytics, no tracking and no advertising, and loads nothing from other companies: fonts and images come from this server.

To deliver a page your browser necessarily sends its IP address to our server. We do not keep an access log for this website. If a request fails, the web server writes an error line that can contain the IP address; these lines are deleted after 14 days at the latest. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR — our legitimate interest in operating a secure website.

The server is a virtual machine rented from IONOS SE, Elgendorfer Str. 57, 56410 Montabaur, Germany, which processes this data on our behalf under a data processing agreement (Art. 28 GDPR). The data stays in the EU.

What the device sends

A Smart Meteo device has no account and does not send your measurements to us. It contacts our server (ota.smartmeteo.org) only to

check once a day whether a firmware update exists, and download it;
search for your city name while you type it into the device's settings page.

These requests carry the device's public IP address and, for the city search, the text you typed. Update checks are logged with IP address and time and deleted after 14 days; city searches are logged with time and result code only, not the search text. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (providing the device's functions) and Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (security of the update service).

Depending on what you set up, the device also talks directly — not through us — to MET Norway (weather, using the coordinates of your city), OpenWeatherMap (only if you enter your own key), Telegram (only if you connect a bot), your own MQTT broker, or your Matter smart home. Their own privacy policies apply to those services.

Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing and objection (Art. 15–18, 21 GDPR). Write to the e-mail address above. You may also complain to a data protection supervisory authority.
